From 14 Ideas to Two Paid Gigs: Shanon’s Library Consulting Clarity
Shanon spent decades as a Library Media Specialist. When she started thinking about consulting, she had no shortage of ideas: weeding and culling collections, merchandising, book discussions, renovation planning, volunteer supervision, social media, inclusive programming, automated systems, right-to-read advocacy. Fourteen ideas, all pulling in different directions, none of them turned into a plan.
That’s what brought her to a single 60-minute Purpose-Driven Strategy Session. Not a full program. Just one focused hour to get out of her own head and onto paper.
The Real Problem Wasn’t a Lack of Ideas
Shanon didn’t need more brainstorming. She needed someone to help her see what was already there: a master’s degree in Special Education most librarians don’t have, hands-on experience organizing materials and volunteers through real renovations, and a lens on library programming that most of her peers simply don’t carry. She also needed to name a fear directly, that past interview rejections weren’t proof of her value, just proof that a few interviews had gone badly.
Fourteen scattered ideas narrowed to three clear service offerings, backed by a “why you” answer she could say out loud with confidence, and a concrete outreach list of libraries she already had relationships with.
One Session, Real Bookings
Shanon walked out of the session with a plan built around inclusive storytime training, weeding and collection consulting, and renovation support, exactly the three ideas that had felt most energizing to her going in. By early summer, two libraries had hired her. Old Saybrook booked a six-week storytime series. Bloomfield brought her on too. A children’s librarian in Groton was writing a grant specifically to fund her work.
“I am fortunate that Old Saybrook hired me for a series of six storytimes… I have a start and hope to get good reviews from the libraries I do have gigs.”
Caregivers noticed the difference too. After one of her sensory storytimes at Acton Public Library, one parent wrote that her two children, ages two and three, who “usually don’t sit still,” were able to follow along and pay attention for the whole session.
Common Questions
Can one coaching session actually change the direction of a side business?
Yes, when the session is built to turn a long list of ideas into a small, testable set of offerings. Shanon went from fourteen scattered ideas to three clear services and an outreach plan in a single 60-minute session.
What does a single Career Strategy Session cost?
A single session is $497 and is designed as a focused, standalone starting point, not a stripped-down version of a full program.
Who is a single session a good fit for?
It works well for someone with a specific, well-defined question, like clarifying a niche, pressure-testing an idea, or building confidence around an outreach plan, rather than a broader career pivot that needs ongoing support.
